Our Mission
Rare cancers account for 27% of all cancers (NCT 2019). The significant gap between five-year survival rates of common cancers (~63%) and rare cancers (~49%) (IARC 2024) contextualizes the need for increased awareness and attention to rare cancers. (Organization name) strives to fight against rare cancers by promoting familiarity among the general public and allocating funds to research and treatment.
Saif Amin: Founder and CEO of Rare Cancer Awareness
My name is Saif Amin, and I am a pre-med student at Stony Brook University. I was exposed to cancer primarily through my research experience (working in Dr. Yusuf Hannun’s sphingolipid cancer lab), inspiring me to start Rare Cancer Awareness. The role of sphingolipids in cancer is a developing field, and this novel approach to cancer therapeutics research allowed me to comprehend the complexity of cancer and how much we have yet to learn. Furthermore, rare cancers mirror sphingolipids in cancer because the research is in a developing stage for many of the specific cancers. Enlightened by my research, I found that a lot of information regarding rare cancers is not easily accessible to the public as much of the information lies in scientific studies. My goal is to provide the public with streamlined information on rare cancers to help the affected and their families
